The Five Daily Prayers in Madinah

There are five daily prayers. Fajr is the first prayer, before sunrise. Dhuhr is the midday prayer. Asr is the afternoon prayer. Maghrib is the prayer at sunset. Isha is the night prayer, after dark. The times change a little each day, because the days get longer and shorter through the year.

The adhan is the call that tells you a prayer time has started. At a big mosque, the group prayer starts a short time after the adhan. This gap is called the iqama. Timetable apps show adhan times. At the Prophet’s Mosque, follow the mosque’s own announcement for the group prayer, not only your app. Your app can tell you the time has come, but the mosque tells you when the group prayer starts.

Friday Prayer in Madinah

On Fridays, there is no normal Dhuhr prayer. Instead, there is Jummah, the Friday group prayer. First there is a short talk, called a khutbah. Then the prayer follows right after it. The whole Friday prayer usually takes about 30 to 45 minutes.

Friday prayer follows the Dhuhr time for that day. At the Prophet’s Mosque, Friday is very busy. Go early if you want a place inside. Not every small mosque holds a Friday prayer, so check with the mosque first if you are new to an area.

Praying at the Prophet’s Mosque

Madinah is known first for one place: the Prophet’s Mosque, Al-Masjid an-Nabawi. It was built after the Prophet moved to Madinah in 622, next to his house. At first it was a simple open building. It was also a place where people met, learned, and settled disputes. Today it is one of the largest mosques in the world, and the second-holiest site in Islam after the Grand Mosque in Makkah.

The Green Dome is the part most visitors look for first. It is in the south-east corner of the mosque. A wooden dome was first built over the tomb in 1279. It was rebuilt more than once over the years, and it was first painted green in 1837. That is why people call it the Green Dome today.

If this is your first visit, plan around prayer, not around sightseeing. Arrive before the prayer, not at the last minute. The mosque is very busy at prayer times, and even more so on Fridays and in Ramadan. Dress modestly. Keep your phone quiet. If you want to visit the Rawdah, the area near the tomb, check the current official guidance before you go. The rules for visiting it change, so this guide does not print a rule that may already be out of date.

Quba Mosque and Visiting Madinah

A second mosque many visitors go to is Quba Mosque. It was the first mosque built in Islam. Its foundations were laid by the Prophet in 622, when he arrived in Madinah. It sits about 3 to 4 kilometres southwest of the Prophet’s Mosque. A well-known narration says that prayer in Quba Mosque carries the reward of an Umrah. That is why so many visitors go there, often after they have prayed at the Prophet’s Mosque.

Madinah is a quiet city to walk in, and most visitors stay near the Prophet’s Mosque. Hotels, shops, and old markets are close by. Plan your day around the five prayers, and leave extra time before Friday prayer, when the streets near the mosque are at their busiest.

Why Your App May Show a Different Time

Saudi Arabia uses the Umm al-Qura method. This is the method used for prayer times in Madinah. Under this method, Fajr is set when the sun is 18.5 degrees below the horizon, and Isha is set 90 minutes after Maghrib. In Ramadan, Isha is set 120 minutes after Maghrib. If your app uses a different method, its times will not match the mosques in Madinah. To match Madinah mosques, set your app to Umm al-Qura.

Asr can also be different. There are two ways to work out Asr. In the standard way, Asr starts when the shadow of an object is as long as the object itself. In the Hanafi way, Asr starts when the shadow is twice as long as the object. That is why Hanafi Asr is later. If you follow the Hanafi school, set your app to Hanafi for Asr.

Madinah times are also different from other cities, even if only by a few minutes. Madinah and Jeddah use the same clock, but Madinah is further north and west, so its sunrise and sunset fall at slightly different times. Use Madinah times while you are in Madinah. When you travel, switch to that city’s times — for example, use Jeddah prayer times while you are in Jeddah. For how times work across the whole country, see the Prayer time in Saudi Arabia guide.

Eid Prayer in Madinah

Eid prayer in Madinah is in the morning, after sunrise. It is prayed in a group. Many people look for the Eid prayer time in Madinah before Eid, but the exact time for each Eid is announced by local mosques close to the day. This guide does not print an Eid time, because no verified Madinah Eid time was found. Check your local mosque’s announcement before Eid, and arrive early.
