Five Daily Prayers in Makkah

There are five daily prayers: Fajr before sunrise, Dhuhr at midday, Asr in the afternoon, Maghrib at sunset, and Isha at night. In Makkah the day starts early. Fajr is around five in the morning in late October, Dhuhr is at midday, Maghrib is at sunset, and Isha comes about one and a half hours after Maghrib.

Many people pray in or near Masjid al-Haram, the Grand Mosque, and that changes how you plan your day. Shops, transport, and visits all pause around prayer time, so leave extra time to get to the Haram area. The streets near it are busy before every prayer, and much busier before Friday prayer. These are Makkah times only. Riyadh prayer times are a few minutes different, because Riyadh has its own sunrise and sunset.

Friday Prayer in the Haram

On Fridays, there is no normal Dhuhr prayer. Instead, there is Jummah, the Friday group prayer. In Makkah, Friday prayer in the Haram catches many pilgrims out in one way, so read this part before you go.

The first adhan you hear on a Friday in Makkah is a warning, not the start of prayer. It sounds about 30 minutes early. Do not start praying when you hear it. Sit and wait. There is no long talk before the sermon, as there is in many other countries. After the second adhan, the khutbah, the sermon, starts straight away. Stay quiet during it. The prayer follows right after it. If you missed the Sunnah prayers before the sermon, pray them after the main prayer.

Go early on Fridays. The Haram fills up fast, so arrive in the mid-morning, around 10 or 11 AM, to find a place inside. Roads near the Haram may close before Friday prayer, so walking may be faster than a car or taxi. If you arrive late, you may have to pray outside the mosque, so plan for an early start.

Praying in the Haram, or Near It

Masjid al-Haram is the Grand Mosque in Makkah, home of the Kaaba, the direction Muslims face in prayer. For many people, praying there is the reason they came to Makkah. On a normal day, you can pray in the Haram if you arrive in good time. On Fridays, in Ramadan, and in Hajj season, it is much more crowded and fills up early.

If you cannot get inside, do not push or rush. Pray where you are, in a calm place near the Haram, and follow the staff announcements there. The prayer time is the same across Makkah, inside the Haram or in a mosque nearby. Dress modestly, carry little, and give yourself time after prayer, because the streets are full and the walk can be long.

Why Your App May Show a Different Time

If your app shows a different time from Makkah mosques, check the method first. Makkah mosques use the Umm al-Qura method. With this method, Fajr is set at 18.5 degrees below the horizon, and Isha is set at 90 minutes after Maghrib, or 120 minutes in Ramadan. A different method will not match Makkah mosques, so set your app to Umm al-Qura.

Next, check the Asr setting. Standard Asr is set when the shadow of an object is as long as the object itself. Hanafi Asr is later, when the shadow is twice as long. If both your city and your method are right, but the time is still one or two minutes different, that is usually rounding, so use the live widget above, or the prayer board in the Haram, as your final check. For how times work across the country, see the Saudi Arabia prayer guide.

For Pilgrims Arriving in Makkah

Most pilgrims arrive in Jeddah first, then travel to Makkah, which is about 65 kilometres east of Jeddah. While you are in Jeddah, use Jeddah prayer times. When you arrive in Makkah, switch to Makkah times. They are only a few minutes different, but they are timed to Makkah sunrise and sunset, not Jeddah’s.

Night Prayer in Makkah

The night prayer after Isha and before Fajr is called Tahajjud. There is no single fixed clock time that fits every night, because the length of the night changes through the year. The last part of the night is often described as the best time for it. Check the night’s Fajr time in the table or widget above and plan backwards from it, rather than following a fixed Tahajjud time that would be wrong on most nights.

Eid Prayer in Makkah

Eid prayer is in the morning, after sunrise, as a group. It takes place at the Grand Mosque and at other mosques and prayer grounds in Makkah. The exact time is announced locally, close to the day, so check a local announcement before Eid. Arrive very early, because Eid brings some of the biggest crowds of the year.

Questions About Prayer in Makkah

What is the prayer time in Makkah today?

Use the table and the live widget at the top of this page for today. Times change a little each day, so do not use an old table for another day.

Why is my app showing a different time from Makkah mosques?

Check your city and your method. Your city must be Makkah, and your method must be Umm al-Qura. If either one is different, the times will not match. If both are right, trust the live widget above, or the prayer board in the Haram.

Why is Hanafi Asr later than standard Asr?

Standard Asr is set when the shadow of an object is as long as the object itself. Hanafi Asr is set when the shadow is twice as long as the object. That is why Hanafi Asr is later. Set your app to the school you follow.

What time is Friday prayer in the Haram?

Friday prayer replaces Dhuhr, so it follows that day’s Dhuhr time. The first adhan is a warning about 30 minutes early. After the second adhan, the sermon starts straight away, then the prayer follows. Go early, in the mid-morning, because the Haram fills up fast.

What time is Eid prayer in Makkah?

Eid prayer is in the morning, after sunrise, as a group. The exact time is announced close to the day, so check a local announcement and arrive very early.
