Five Daily Prayers in Riyadh
There are five daily prayers. Fajr comes before sunrise, and its time ends at sunrise. Dhuhr is the late-morning prayer in Riyadh. Asr is the afternoon prayer. Maghrib is at sunset. Isha is the night prayer, and in Riyadh it comes about one and a half hours after Maghrib.
The Asr time in the table is the standard time used in Riyadh mosques. If you follow the Hanafi school, your Asr time is later. In the Hanafi way, Asr starts when the shadow of an object is twice as long as the object itself. Check your mosque or your app’s Hanafi setting for that time, because this page does not print a Hanafi clock-time for today.
Friday Prayer in Riyadh
On Fridays, there is no normal Dhuhr prayer. Instead, there is Jummah, the Friday group prayer. First there is a short talk, called a khutbah. Then the prayer follows right after it. The whole Friday prayer usually takes about 30 to 45 minutes.
Friday prayer follows the Dhuhr time for that day, so on a Friday, check that day’s table or widget for the Dhuhr time. Go early. Large mosques in Riyadh fill up fast on Fridays. Not every small mosque holds a Friday prayer, and each mosque sets its own khutbah time, so check with the mosque first if you are new to an area.
Mosques in Riyadh
Riyadh has mosques in every part of the city, from large grand mosques to small neighbourhood mosques. Names you will see in Riyadh include King Khalid Grand Mosque, King Fahad Mosque, and King Abdulaziz Mosque. This page does not give opening hours or prayer timetables for single mosques, because each mosque sets its own iqamah time and its own Friday time.
Mosques in Riyadh are working mosques first. Dress modestly, and visit outside prayer times if you only want to see the building. If you are staying in one area, ask at the mosque nearest you for its Friday time, because that time is the one that matters for your visit.
Why Your App May Show a Different Time
If your app shows a different time from the table above, check three things, in this order. First, check the city. Is your app set to Riyadh, the city you are actually in? Second, check the method. Is your app set to Umm al-Qura? Riyadh mosques use Umm al-Qura. Under this method, Fajr is set when the sun is 18.5 degrees below the horizon, and Isha is set 90 minutes after Maghrib. In Ramadan, Isha is set 120 minutes after Maghrib. Third, check Asr. In the standard way, Asr starts when the shadow of an object is as long as the object itself. In the Hanafi way, it starts when the shadow is twice as long. That is why Hanafi Asr is later.
If all three checks are right and the time still looks a little different, trust your local mosque. Small differences of a minute or two between trusted sites are usually rounding, not a mistake. A bigger difference usually means the wrong method: other methods give a much earlier Isha than Umm al-Qura, even for the same city on the same day. For how the same method works across the whole country, see the Saudi Arabia prayer guide.
Visiting Riyadh
Riyadh is the capital of Saudi Arabia, and it sits inland, on high ground in the centre of the country. That is one reason its times are different from coastal cities. Riyadh is east of Jeddah, so its sunrise and sunset come earlier, and its Dhuhr falls in the late morning rather than at midday. Use Riyadh times while you are in Riyadh. When you travel on, switch to the times for the city you arrive in, because each city has its own sunrise and sunset. While you are on the west coast, use Jeddah prayer times. If your trip takes you to the holy cities, use Makkah prayer times once you arrive there.
Plan your day around the prayers, not around them as an afterthought. Shops and offices pause around prayer time, and traffic near large mosques gets busy before Friday prayer. Give yourself extra time on Fridays and on public holidays.
Eid Prayer in Riyadh
Eid prayer in Riyadh is in the morning, after sunrise. It is prayed in a group. The exact time for each Eid is announced by local mosques close to the day. This page does not print an Eid time, because no verified Riyadh Eid time can be fixed in advance. Check your local mosque’s announcement before Eid, and arrive early.
Questions About Prayer Time in Riyadh
What is prayer time Riyadh today?
Check the table at the top of this page for today, and the live widget below it for tomorrow. Times change a little each day, so do not use one day’s table for another day.
What time is Friday prayer in Riyadh?
Friday prayer replaces Dhuhr on Fridays. There is a short talk first, then the prayer. The whole prayer usually takes 30 to 45 minutes. Check that Friday’s table or widget for the Dhuhr time, and go early, because large mosques fill up fast.
Why does my app show a different time from Riyadh mosques?
Check three things: your city, your method, and your Asr setting. Your city must be Riyadh. Your method must be Umm al-Qura. If you follow the Hanafi school, your Asr setting must be Hanafi. If all three are right, trust your local mosque.
Are Riyadh prayer times the same as Jeddah prayer times?
No. Each city has its own sunrise and sunset, so each city has its own times. Riyadh is east of Jeddah, so its times run earlier. Use Riyadh times while you are in Riyadh, and Jeddah times while you are in Jeddah.
What time is Eid prayer in Riyadh?
Eid prayer is in the morning, after sunrise, in a group. The exact time for each Eid is announced by local mosques close to the day. This page does not print a fixed Eid time. Check the local announcement before Eid and arrive very early.
